Kotor Montenegro captures your imagination. From the moment you start winding your way around the entrance bays to wandering the narrow ancient streets. This place is intoxicating on many levels.
Cavtat Croatia was a sweet surprise. Quiet tree lined path around the peninsula with stunning views, crystal clear waters, hidden coves, seaside cafes.
Think you know what a chicken bus is like? Think again. This particular chicken rode in comfort and style, his owner pampering, petting and feeding him as we traveled along. I never saw anyone give so much loving attention to a chicken. What a lucky chicken!
Fiesta de Reyes (Festival of the Three Kings / Epiphany) is a national holiday in Colombia. Always in early January and always a big deal with parades and celebrations everywhere. Since Christmas festivities start in early December, that means a full month of continuous special events and family gatherings!
My recent experience with Colombian police in Popayán left me quite impressed. They’re helpful and polite, and yet still always alert and protective. I’m always happy to see them around. And it seems like the Colombians really like them too.
Be sure to include Cali Colombia in your list of cities to visit when you’re in Colombia. My personal experience is that it’s safe, beautiful and fun. Especially at Christmas time when it’s all dressed up in lights. A delightful mix of old and new. And economical too.
What can you do with that old used baby buggy in your garage? Give it away to friends or relatives? Take it to the land fill? Or just perhaps… maybe you’ve got a hankering for a portable barbque? Take a look at what’s done in Cali, Colombia by the local street vendors.
Else Kientzler Botanical Gardens is a worthwhile stop in Sarchí, Costa Rica. Only 1.5 Km from town. Photos, maps, plus detailed walking directions.
Sarchi oxcarts are a national symbol of Costa Rica. Brightly colored with geometric designs. 120 year old tradition. Visit the Eloy Alfaro factory in town.
Tour Finca Dos Jefes in Boquete. Learn about organic growing and processing, what is cascara, dark vs. light roast. Taste-test coffee and roast it yourself.
West of Boquete in the small town of Volcán the annual fall flower festival is a big event. Fresh flower “statues” decorate the town and the schoolgrounds.
The Boquete Tuesday Market is not a huge market, but in terms of international variety and overall quality, it’s one of the best I’ve been to. A huge “Yum”!
A whale watching adventure with a stranger from Pamplona Spain. Proof that off-season bargains can be had if you know how to negotiate. (Or can keep quiet!)
The Golden Frog is the National symbol of Panama and good luck. Nearly extinct it lives only in captivity. Are we saving the frog? Or is the frog saving us?
The Holy Ghost orchid is Panama’s rare and endangered national flower. See it and many more at APROVACA Orchid Center. A beautiful educational experience.
Be sure to visit this delightful place. Don’t rush. Sit quietly and you’ll likely have some land on you. This is education at it’s best – learn and ENJOY!
Miraflores Locks is a must-see attraction. Like a slow motion ballet, these giants move from one water level to the next. Includes updated bus instructions.
The Amador Causeway is great for getting away from the hot city and enjoying the view and breeze. Don’t miss the giant elephant size SLOTHS at the Biomuseo.
Panama City has modern skyscrapers, metro system, quaint old neighborhoods, huge shopping malls, and a square mile of dense JUNGLE within the city limits.
Traveling to Belgium? Put Ghent on your “must see” list. Fully pedestrianized city center. Beautiful architecture. Only a 30 min train ride from Brussels.
My first Cuenca visit, Feb 2017 with list of my general impressions. Lots to like about this charming city. Visit was way too short, will return late 2017.
